I’ve made this pattern 3 times and I love it, when it was first released I was hesitant to purchase as I wasn’t sure it was my style, but after seeing so many amazing versions I had to give it a go. I can’t believe I waited so long, it’s so flattering and because of the shirring the fit is incredibly forgiving. It looks more complicated than it is but it actually was a fairly easy project and so perfect for the summer.

Tilly and The Buttons - Mabel Dress

Fit wise Mabel was a dream!  My measurements always fit more or less perfectly into a size three with Tilly & The Buttons.  Sometimes I need to make adjustments but with this pattern both the top and the dress fit with no problems at all which was amazing!  The shirring at the waist and cuffs helps a lot as the elastic is obviously very forgiving around the waist and hips.  Length wise, the peplum section of the top hits me just around the hips and I added the suggested 23.5 inches to the pattern piece and was happy with the length of the skirt portion of the dress.  So far I have found that the elasticated sleeve heads stay in place properly with no slipping down which is great and the front and back neckline sits nicely against my chest / back with no problems. The only issue I have experienced is the sleeves do seem to twist round a small amount when I wear both the dress and the top, so I have found myself fiddling with them a little bit.  I’m not sure whether that’s my sewing, the pattern, or anything else.  But that’s just a very minor point, so all in all, a great pattern fit wise!

Not for projectors. Plus-sized sewists should check key measurements.

I fell in love with this dress as soon as I saw it and bought it almost immediately. I sew with a projector, though, so I was surprised and disappointed that there are no layers in Tilly and the Buttons patterns. I checked around and they don't have any plans to add them. The pattern is black and white with different line types which can be difficult to deal with. The instructions are very verbose. I would prefer less wording or at least a quick sheet of steps separate from the pages and pages of text and photographs. I made the mistake of measuring the un-shirred sleeve and assuming it would be sufficient shirred but it was extremely narrow (about 12" for their size 7). The bodice is also very short. (my measurements: ub 40, fb 44, w 43, h 51.5 and I'm 5'6"). I made 7 graded to 10. It does look cute finished, but I just want to add these caveats. If you always print and then trace, it should be fine. Not recommended for people who use projectors.
