Buy the Ivy Pinafore Dress sewing pattern from Jennifer Lauren Handmade. With two completely different silhouettes - an A-line style tent dress and a slim-fit variation - Ivy transforms the everyday overall into a feminine and comfy garment with an option for everyone. Button-down straps can be functional or stitched in place and topstitching can add a subtle or contrasting detail. Fully lined and with pockets to boot, Ivy is a sturdy little number that is just as at home relaxing on the couch as it is kicking leaves and splashing in puddles. Team Ivy with boots for coffee on the weekend, wellies for digging in the garden or slippers for some fireside knitting action.

What we think: The variation in silhouette makes this a really versatile pattern. Make it in cotton to wear with a T-shirt in the summer. For winter, why not make a corduroy version to wear with a polo neck top?
Suggested fabrics: The Ivy Pinafore was designed with medium weight fabrics with drape in mind. Pinwale corduroy, denim, duck, jacquard, brocade and drill make a great year-round dress. For winter, snuggle up in wools and velvet.
Use matching lightweight lining.
If inserting pockets, especially for View 2, a lighter weight fabric is recommended for these - cotton poplin, lawn and linen all make lovely, sturdy and lightweight pockets. Or try colourful quilting cotton for a fun and unique detail.

View 1 Dress: 115 cm (45") wide fabric: 3.25 - 3.75 m (3.55 - 4.1 yd) // 150 cm (60") wide fabric: 2.25 - 2.5 m (2.46 - 2.73 yd).
View 1 Lining: 115 cm (45") wide fabric: 3.25 - 3.75 m (3.55 - 4.1 yd) // 150 cm (60") wide fabric: 2 - 2.25 m (2.18 - 2.46 yd).
View 2 Dress: 115 cm (45") wide fabric: 2.25 - 2.75 m (2.46 - 3 yd) // 150 cm (60") wide fabric: 1.75 - 2 m (1.91 - 2.18 yd).

Sizing: UK 6 – 24 with A – D cups or UK 16 – 34 with C – F cups. Please check the size charts and finished garment measurements.
Note: There is a crossover of 2 cups (C and D) and 5 sizes (16 – 24) between the Original and Curve size ranges. The Original and Curve patterns are based on two different blocks, and because of this, the shape, ease and proportions of the crossover patterns vary depending on the block used. Please check both size charts if you fall into this range.
To determine your cup size, wear supportive undergarments, then keeping your tape measure parallel to the floor (make sure it is not dipping at the back), measure both your full bust (the widest part of your bust, all the way around) and your high bust (the upper part of your bust around and under the arm pits). Use the difference between these measurements to determine your approximate cup size: A cup = 1 cm (3/8″), B cup = 3 cm (1 1/4″), C cup = 5 cm (2″), D cup = 7.5 cm (3″), E cup = 10 cm (4″), F cup = 12.5 cm (4 7/8″). Then, to determine your bodice size, find your full bust measurement (or closest to) along your corresponding cup row on the size chart.
Ivy is drafted for an average height of 170 cm (5’7″).
Notions: Lightweight fusible interfacing, 55 x 78 cm; 2 buttons, approx. 4 cm (1 5/8") diameter or smaller; matching and/or contrast thread // Optional: Denim or heavy weight sewing machine needle depending on chosen fabric; lightweight fabric for pockets to reduce bulk/weight around hips.
PDF pattern includes: Instructions; A4/US letter print-at-home pattern (55-77 pages for sizes 6-24 or 64-78 pages for sizes 16-34, but you only need to print the pages for your cup size); A0 copy shop pattern (5 sheets for each view in sizes 6-24 or 5 sheets for each view sizes 16-34, but you only need to print the sheets for your cup size). This pattern has layers so you can select your size(s) before printing.

This is my second Ivy Pinafore and I really can't recommend it enough. I have been struggling with my sewjo a little lately but this sew definitely re-ignited my enthusiasm. The pinafore is fully lined but it is an easy sew with excellent instructions. I love the fact that it looks so neat on the inside too. There are very few pattern pieces so it is a fairly quick make and something that a beginner could tackle. I love the topstiching along the centre front and the yoke fastening can easily be modified if you don't wish to add buttonholes. I did add buttonholes but the pinafore easily slips over my head so the front and back yokes could be sewn together. This is my second version of the Ivy pinafore and I can't recommend the pattern enough. It's easy to make, but the finishing is so neat and clean I think sewists of all levels could tackle this project and make a garment they are delighted with.
I used a lightweight wool for my dress and made it in the size 10 with no alterations. I'm delighted with the finished garment - it's warm and comfortable and I think the self-covered buttons give it a fun 60s vibe.

The Ivy Pinafore Dress proved to be the perfect choice for a thick wide wale corduroy I had purchased.
I chose to make the unlined version due to the thickness of the fabric. Jennifer Lauren Handmade has instructions for this version on her blog. The pictures which accompanied the instructions for this version appeared slightly complicated, particularly for the curved yoke and straps. However, a bit of patience and taking it step by step resulted in a lovely finish to the yoke. The yoke lining is black and white check winter cotton.
The large rose shaped buttons were sewn through both straps, once fitted. There is no need for buttonholes!
The fit was perfect for me with no adjustments made. A highly recommended pattern. This would sew up lovely for summer in a cotton drill or denim.

This is such a great pattern to sew, and since I bought the pattern several months ago I have been waiting for the weather to turn colder so that I could get on and sew it. Although there is no reason why you couldn't wear it in warmer weather - for me, especially as it is fully lined, it is perfect for Autumn/Winter.
There are two dresses that you can make with this pattern. I chose to make the gentle A-line version, but you can also opt for the looser tent-style dress too.
I used a brown corduroy, which was lovely, but the top stitching details and the flat-felled seams got a bit lost in the wales of the corduroy, so I think I must definitely make another with a fabric that I can see those details on better.
The pattern and instructions are faultless, I have made her Pippi Pinafore before and again, it was a lovely pattern - you can see that a great deal of work has gone into it.
The curved yoke and straps are real features. I really like the big buttons that alot of people have used when sewing up this pinafore, however when I held up a large button when trying it on, I felt like the recommended 4cm (or smaller) sized button was much too big for me, and opted for a 2cm jeans button instead. I did sew the buttonholes for it, but as it is a 'pull on and off over the head' type dress, then you don't have to make them working buttons (if you don't like sewing buttonholes).

I really loved making this. It's simple to make but the finishing is flawless. It's easy to fit as well and it looks really cute. I made version 2 and I definitely want to make a denim one and a lightweight version to wear as a dress when it's warmer.
