Suggested fabrics: The Hughes Dress is designed for woven fabrics. You will get a different look depending on the fabric you select. A drapey rayon or silk will give a more elegant dressy look, while a more sturdy fabric like a linen will give you a gorgeous everyday dress. We encourage you to be creative and daring with fabric, any dress weight woven fabric is suitable.

Fabric requirements: You may need to purchase extra if your fabric has a heavy nap, is directional, striped, or has an obvious repeat.

Main: 45" (114 cm) wide fabric: 3.33 - 4.7 yd (3 - 4.3 m) // 54-60" (137-152 cm) wide fabric: 2.4 - 4 yd (2.2 - 3.7 m).

Great Pattern!

I made this with a green linen. It fits perfectly using the recommended sizes (16c). Lots of complements. Good instructions and straightforward.

Perfect first time!

I absolutely loved making this dress, and love it t more that my "first stab toile" has become a proper part of my wardrobe!

The pattern comes with two bust sizes which was great as it meant I didn't need to faff with a FBA, and it also has corset style ties on the back which meant I could be a bit more relaxed with the back fit. I took 6 inches out of the length of the skirt to accommodate my height, or lack of, and also to bring it above the knee.

The pattern does involve some hand stitching to secure the lining at the armholes which I was dreading, but actually by the time I finished up I was contemplating hand sewing the waist lining too ?.

Overall I love this and am already planning my next one.

Dream 90’s dress!

The Hughes Dress is a 90’s silhouette and a great pattern to start with if you’d like to try out princess seams, as with the back waist ties fitting is not too much of a challenge.

I found the sizing relatively small on this and ended up making a L graded to XL so if you like a looser fit, size up. I also did a narrow shoulder and sloping shoulder adjustment.

The Hughes has a lot of pieces so you need to be organised when prepping these and the interfacing etc. However if you commit some time to this the dress then comes together really nicely. This is my favourite version, in a viscose and shortened by 15 cm, however you could also use cottons, linens and crepe too. Overall I happily recommend this dress!
