Buy the Fleetwood Dress sewing pattern from French Navy. The Fleetwood Dress is a versatile piece to accompany you through the seasons. The button-up bodice is gently shaped by side panels which, coupled with the back and front yokes, offer ample opportunity for creativity and customisation in the form of colour-blocking or pattern interplay. Alternatively, for those in pursuit of a minimalist aesthetic, sew the Fleetwood in a solid colour to highlight these subtle details.

View A has a more bohemian feel, featuring a two-tiered gathered skirt that sits just below the natural waist, while View B, with its dropped-waist and single gathered skirt is a modern, tomboyish take on the flapper silhouette. Both views have 3/4 length sleeves with a placket and cuff to facilitate rolling them up should temperatures rise.

115 cm (45") wide fabric: View A (sizes A-B only): 2.3 m (2.5 yd) // View B: 2 - 2.4 m (2.2 - 2.6 yd).

Sizing: A - H (approx. UK 6 – 18). Please check the size chart and finished garment measurements.

The Fleetwood Dress is drafted for a height of 171 cm (5'7").

Really cute shirt dress with lovely details

I really like the whole style of French Navy patterns and was very keen to try the Fleetwood dress.  It's a really cute shirt dress with some lovely details including an optional skirt ruffle, cuffed three-quarter length sleeves and a panelled bodice.  There are two different options of waist-line - one higher and one below the waist.  So there are plenty of options and combinations that you could enjoy playing with.

I chose to make version A with a higher waist-line and the skirt ruffle.  I made a toile of the bodice first and I'm glad I did as I had to make a few adjustments for my body shape.

I really enjoyed sewing the dress and found the instructions really clear.  I made it in a really lovely soft chambray to give it a classic shirt dress vibe but with a twist.

My gingham dress of dreams

I made this in View A, but with View B's skirt (I didn't have quite enough fabric - the troubles with ordering without a goal pattern!). I made it in a size C, but with a full bust adjustment (my measurements are B: 36", W:26", H:37") and it fits like a dream.

It was a dream to make, with lots of fun details like the slightly gather sleeves and back bodice, and the sleeve plackets and cuffs. The instructions were very comprehensive with lots of good diagrams - I'm a competent beginner, and didn't need to refer to youtube for help once!

I decided to make the sleeves elbow length, and length the cuff to have an overlap where the buttonhole was.

I couldn't recommend this dress more - I made it last weekend and have worn it 4 times since!!

Perfect Christmas dress

I really love this dress. It took a bit of tweaking to get the fit right, and there's an additional change I will make on my next one but it was worth the toiles.

I cut a C for the bodice and D for the skirt.

I added in-seam pockets as well, using a pattern piece from another dress.

I had to do two full bicep adjustments on the sleeve. I often have to do this adjustment but my usual addition wasn't enough. My advice would be to check the sleeve width if you're unsure.

Aside from that, it's a great pattern and I hope to make again. I think it's a dress that will carry over multiple seasons, which is always a bonus!

Fleetwood Dress

This is a really great dress. The fit is great, the instructions are clear and I love the shape of it. I made a size B, version A but I ended up having to remove the sleeves because I chose not to listen to my gut, which told me I should've done a full bicep adjustment. I still think it's a lovely pattern and I will have a go at it again in the future.

Where it loses one star for me though is that there were a few small errors I came across while making it. Nothing major, just a notch in the wrong place, incorrect seam allowance for stay stitching, etc. Small details that should've been picked up by pattern testers.

Other than that it's a great, comfortable dress that leaves plenty of room for lockdown snacks while still looking really cute.

There are more photos and further details about it here.

New favourite dress!

As soon as I saw the beautiful samples of the new Fleetwood dress by French Navy I added it to my ‘to make’ list immediately. A button up bodice, cuffed sleeves and a gathered skirt are some of my favourite garment details – add in an interesting yoke and an extra ruffle and I’m in heaven!

I picked out some lovely chambray from Sew by the Sea for my project. I thought a plain fabric would highlight the pattern details well and the denim colour would give a nice casual vibe to the garment. I chose some unusual buttons that I had bought from Taylor’s in London and a matching sandy coloured thread to add a bit of classic ‘denim shirt’ style top-stitching and I love how well these details have worked.

I’m so pleased with my finished dress and I definitely think I’ll be making another Fleetwood at some point – I love the shape on me and the fit is really good (although I would probably do a full bicep adjustment next time). I might try a version with a single, longer skirt tier next and perhaps play around with my fabric choice or the direction on those yoke panels – I can’t wait!
