Buy the Valerie Dress sewing pattern from Forget-me-not Patterns. Valerie features elegantly curved raglan lines on the front and back, a fitted bodice, and an A-line skirt with slash pockets. The raglan sleeve is tailored with a dart at the shoulder.

Choose from four sleeve options: long sleeves gathered into a cuff, a gathered three-quarter sleeve, a plain short sleeve, or a short sleeve finished with a flounce. There are also three bust fit options (small, medium and full) to make fitting easier!

The diagonals that repeat in the raglan lines and pockets are a great opportunity to play with colour-blocking, piping, or topstitching. Try a casual cotton chambray or linen for a sporty feel, or dress to impress with a stunning print or fabric with a sheen.

This sewing pattern is available to buy in the following formats:

– PDF (available to download immediately after purchase). What is a PDF?

– PDF pattern + Printed A0 copy shop (We print out the A0 pattern sheets, but you'll need to download the digital instructions, as we don't print these. The PDF files will be emailed immediately after purchase, and the A0 pattern sheets will be dispatched next working day). What is Copy Shop?

Suggested fabrics: Valerie is designed for light to medium weight non-stretch wovens. Look for fabrics with a good drape. Viscose/rayons, wools, cottons, and linens are ideal. Although it is designed for non-stretch wovens, you can also use wovens with stretch. For the flounce sleeve view, only use fabrics with soft drape that will fall gently. This pattern is suitable for directional prints, but this will use more fabric. Stripes can be used, but take careful consideration of the placement on the design.

Fabric requirements: Allow extra fabric for directional prints or if lengthening the skirt.

This pattern comes in three bust sizes. To determine your size, measure your high bust and bust. The bust is measured around the body at the fullest part of the bust. The high bust is measured diagonally up and over the bust (see the diagram in the image gallery).

Use these measurements in conjunction with your known cup size to determine which bust fit to make. If the difference between your high bust and bust is less than 1″ (A - B cup), use small bust. If the difference between your high bust and bust is 1″ - 3″ (B - C cup), use medium bust. If the difference between your high bust and bust is 3″ plus (D cup plus), use full bust.

Forget-me-not patterns are designed for a height of 5’6″ (168 cm).

Notions: Thread; 0.3 m (0.3 yd) of lightweight woven fusible interfacing; invisible zip (60 cm/24"); one pair of 1.3 cm (1/2") wide buttons (long sleeve view only); fusing tape (buy pre-made fusing tape, or cut strips of fusing along the grainline), about 1.3 cm (1/2”) wide.

PDF pattern includes: Instructions; A4/US letter print-at-home pattern (43 pages for each bust size); A0 copy shop pattern (2 sheets for each bust size); projector pattern. The PDF files are layered so you can print just the size(s) you need.

Very clever construction

This is a fabulous dress and a really clever pattern, which would be suitable for a more intermediate sewist.

I used some viscose/cotton twill for my Valerie, which I bought from Seasalt. I really do recommend keeping an eye on their fabric sales - I got 3m of this beauty, which is lovely quality, for just under £20!

This is the second Forget Me Not pattern I have used and once again I was very impressed with the quality of instructions. Everything is very well laid out in the booklet with helpful diagrams. When I did find myself momentarily scratching my head at one of the steps, there was a fantastic series of short video clips to support the written instructions on their website - perfect!

I made the size 34 dress with the long sleeve variation. The fit is pretty much perfect with no alterations, but I think next time I would shorten the sleeves by about 1.5". It does recommend checking the sleeve length during construction, but by this point I had already sewn the bound placket and gathers, so I couldn't really make an adjustment.

I've worn the dress a couple of times now and I really love it! It's a very flattering shape and is also comfortable to wear. The pockets look great and are nice and roomy and I love the pretty sleeve details. The way the facing is finished at the zip is very slick and it was so nice to learn a new technique while making the dress. I'm thinking of making the short sleeved version next in a pretty summer print ready for the warm weather!
