Folkwear 148 Unisex Black Forest Smock

Buy the 148 Unisex Black Forest Smock sewing pattern from Folkwear. This traditional smock, called a kittel, was worn by workers in Germany, Switzerland, and France. Soft pleats fall from a wide neckband. Sleeves connect to side panels with gussets, and are pleated at the wrists into buttoned cuff bands. The shoulder yokes, pocket welts, neckband, and cuffs were often decorated with chain-stitching, and embroidery designs and instructions are included in the pattern.

The Black Forest Smock can be worn by men as an over-shirt, and by women as a shirt or mid-calf length dress.

Suggested fabrics: Soft or crisp fabrics such as linen, homespun, broadcloth, gingham, denim, featherweight corduroy, or lightweight wool.

Fabric requirements: Yardages are given for fabric with or without nap.

Men's Shirt: 45″ (115 cm) wide fabric: 2 3/4 - 3 yd (2.5 - 2.7 m) // 60″ (150 cm) wide fabric: 2 1/4 - 2 1/2 yd (2.1 - 2.3 m).

Women's Dress: 45″ (115 cm) wide fabric: 3 3/8 - 3 3/4 yd (3.1 - 3.5 m) // 60″ (150 cm) wide fabric: 2 3/4 - 3 yd (2.6 - 2.8 m).

Sizing: Men's 36 - 44 and Women's 6 - 16 (approx. UK 4/6 – 12, based on our standardised size chart). Please also check the designer’s size chart and finished garment measurements.

Notions: Thread; two buttons for cuffs; materials for optional embroidery.
