Buy the Cortland Trench sewing pattern from Grainline Studio. With its modern swing shape and length that hits mid-hip, the Cortland is an update on the classic trench. Raglan sleeves give you plenty of movement and room for layering while the storm flaps and generous collar keep out inclement weather. The Cortland also features a double-breasted front closure and roomy welt pockets. All seams are bound, which not only gives your coat a professional finish, but also helps it stand up to wear and tear.

Suggested fabrics:

Main fabric: Lightweight coating or medium weight fabrics such as cotton or tencel twill, gabardine, or linen. Make sure your fabric has drape to allow the swing shape of the coat to hang properly. The designer recommends fabric weights between 5 and 8 oz.

Pocket lining fabric: Lightweight cotton fabrics such as chambray, lawn, or pocketing.

Fusible interfacing: Woven or tricot interfacing in a similar, or slightly lighter, weight as your main fabric.

54″ (137 cm) wide fabric: View A, 2 7/8 – 3 1/2 yd (2.6 – 3.1 m) // View B, 3 1/8 – 3 3/4 yd (2.7 – 3.3 m).

Pocket lining fabric: 44″-54″ (114-137 cm) wide fabric: 1/2 yd (0.3 m).

Fusible interfacing: 22″-25″ (55-65 cm) wide: 2 yd (1.6 m).

45″ (114 cm) wide fabric: View A, 4 7/8 – 5 1/3 yd (4.5 – 4.9 m) // View B, 4 7/8 – 5 1/3 yd (4.5 – 4.9 m).

54″ (137 cm) wide fabric: View A, 3 3/4 – 4 yd (3.3 – 3.7 m) // View B, 3 3/4 – 4 yd (3.3 – 3.7 m)

Pocket lining fabric: 44″-54″ (114-137 cm) wide fabric: 1/2 yd (0.3 m).

Fusible interfacing: 22″-25″ (55-65 cm) wide: 2 yd (1.6 m).

Sizing: US 0 – 18 or US 14 – 30 (approx. UK 8 – 18 or UK 16 – 30, based on our standardised size chart). Please also check the designer’s size charts and finished garment measurements.

The 0 – 18 pattern is drafted for a B sewing cup size. The 14 – 30 pattern is drafted for a D sewing cup size. Both patterns are drafted for a height of 5’5″.

Notions: Thread; six 1″ buttons; 12 yd pre-made 1/4″ double fold bias tape if binding seam allowances.
