It’s the fourth episode of series 11 and it's celebrating Korea!
In the fourth episode of The Great British Sewing Bee series 11, nine remaining contestants are challenged with taking on the jeogori, a historic Korean garment now seen in contemporary womenswear and K-pop style, in the transformation challenge tae kwon do outfits and colourful belts are reimagined into striking new creations, and in the Made-to-Measure challenge the sewers design evening wear inspired by the cheollik, once worn by military officials and now a symbol of modern Korean fashion. For episode four we have put our detective hats on to discover the sewing patterns from independent designers and commercial pattern houses used in Sewing Bee TV show. The patterns below are all matches or inspired by the designs used in the second episode of the Great British Sewing bee series 11.
All nine contestants had to make three garments. Take a look at our sewing pattern suggestions below, we’ve tried to find the exact patterns used but where we haven’t been able to, we have plenty of suggestions so that you can recreate these looks at home for your handmade wardrobe. Kate also talks through her favourite pattern options from the episode on YouTube in our special mid-week sewing bee vlog.
Sewing Bee: Pattern Picks
Pattern Challenge 1: Jeogori
The first challenge of the fourth episode was to make a jeogori, a historic Korean garment now seen in contemporary womenswear and K-pop style.
This pattern is not for a jeogori but a traditional short jacket costume of Korea you could try to sew is the chogori part of this han-bok pattern. The jacket's ribbon-accented V-neck draws attention to the face and is a companion to a simple dress or tunic.
The chima (full dress) part of this two part han-bok is simple-sew dress is pleated to a band above the bust, wraps in back, and ties in front. The jacket has elegantly shaped sleeves, wide cuff bands, and narrow ribbon trim along the neckline. It crosses in front and ties in a single-knot bow.
Note the bows on some of the models are not tied in the traditional and correct manner. The correct bow tie is to have a single loop and one longer tail on the tie.
Sizing: Children's 4 - 14 and Women's XS - XL (approx. UK 4/6 - 20, based on our standardised size chart). Please also check the designer's size chart. Available in the shop: Yes, PDF or PDF + printed pattern.
Transformation Challenge 2: tae kwon do outfits
In the upcycling challenge contestants had to reimagine tae kwon do outfits and colourful belts into striking new creations. Specific patterns weren’t used for these tasks as contestants had to create a garment from existing materials in a fixed time so it’s a bit tricky for us to make sewing pattern suggestions based on these design ideas.
Made-To-Measure Challenge 3: design evening wear inspired by the cheollik
In the last challenge of the fourth episode, all the contestants had to design made-to-measure evening wear inspired by the cheollik, once worn by military officials and now a symbol of modern Korean fashion. Here are our pattern picks for the contestants and where sewing patterns have been self drafted or hacked we have suggested an alternative.
