4 out of 5 BHL Alix maxidress for my birthday!

    karinkay

I made the Alix dress for my birthday in a flowery viscose fabric. I was able to squeeze it out of 3.15 meters instead of the 4 the instructions suggest. I first made a toile from my granma’s old bedsheet to see how it would suit me and ended up sizing down.

I made the following changes to the pattern:
    – I added pockets to the side seams 😀
    – I pretty much redesigned the cups cause they looked ‘baggy’ on me. I guess it’s supposed to be that way with the wrinkles but I find it rather unflattering.
    – Lined the cups, so it’s a little bit warmer
    – Shortened both the hem of the dress and the sleeves as I’m only 1.63.

It took quite some time to get the right fit on the cups, but I think it was worth it! The cleavage of the dress is much lower than I usually wear, but as the fit of the neck band piece fits quite nicely, I didn’t have any problems there 😉

The only criticism I have of this pattern is that it has no pockets! And silly me, I forgot to add them in.

I like the simplicity of the Alix. The pleated back and waist tie and give it a flattering shape without any fit issues to consider beyond the bust. I did an FBA for this pattern, basically elongating the front yoke and centre of the cups by an inch and a half.

The elasticated cuffs meant I didn’t have to worry about closures, but next time I will probably add some button cuffs instead.

I loved this dress and it was so much more simple to make than I expected! I did a small bust adjustment and went through this and other things on my blog! Also, there is a link to show you how to do a full bust adjustment for this type of bodice. Enjoy below!

4 out of 5 BHL Alix maxi dress

This is the second version of this pattern I have made and it’s by far my favourite. I made the maxi length version in lightweight fabric from the Textile Centre. I loved constructing this dress as it has some interesting features but isn’t too difficult (and fitting is incredibly easy with the lovely waist ties!). I altered mine by raising the neckline and switching the elasticated cuffs to ones with a loop and button closure.
Full details on all alterations are on my blog at

    Loved making and wearing it!

    Alix dress

    English Girl At Home

This is the Alix Dress (version 2) by By Hand London. The pattern is designed for wovens but I made it up in a stretch velvet. Since the design is loose fitting it doesn’t really require a knit fabric, but it does make it very comfy. The only change I made to the pattern was to add an inch to the length, since Version 2 comes up quite short as drafted.

The Alix dress is a fantastic make. It has 3 length options, maxi, mini and top.
I loved how this came together, the overall fit is great. Would definitely make another.
