Buy a Tear-Away Vilene Pack from Tessuti Fabrics. This is a sewable, lightweight, non-woven tear-off interlining suitable for all fabrics.
Included in the pack:
1 m of black tear-away Vilene
1 m of white tear-away Vilene
Width: 90 cm
Weight: 28 gsm
Composition: 80% cellulose + 20% polyester. The high wood pulp content and short fibre length make it easy to remove by tearing.
Why use it?
Originally developed as a stabilising backing for embroidery, this particular weight of tear-off interlining is used in the ready-to-wear industry to prevent stretching and distortion of vulnerable areas during the construction process. Using tear-away Vilene ensures necklines, armholes, waistlines, curved pocket edges, etc., remain the correct shape and length. It then tears away easily, even on the lightest silks and georgettes.
How to use it
Patterns for high-end apparel include templates for shields to be cut from tear-away Vilene. These shields are stitched to areas such as necklines and armholes before assembly. When stabilisation is no longer required, they are easily removed.
1. Tessuti patterns already include templates for tear-away Vilene shields. For other patterns, make your own templates by tracing the cutting line of the edge to be stabilised. Draw the shield about 1 1/2" (4 cm) away from that edge.
2. Cut shields from tear-away Vilene. There is no grainline so shields can be cut in any direction to minimise wastage.
3. Pin shields to the fabric (generally to the wrong side) using only 2 or 3 pins. Ensure the edge of the fabric exactly fits the edge of each Vilene shield. Sew the shields to the fabric within the seam allowance.
4. Sew the facings or bind the seams, then tear away the shields.
Using tear-away Vilene is staystitching with benefits!
