Buy the French Smock sewing pattern from The Modern Sewing Co. The French Smock is a casual classic that comes with a huge range of design options. Create your own truly unique garment by selecting your favourite features and making something that’s personal to you.

The silhouette of the French Smock is slouchy and oversized with a square cut, dropped shoulders, neat sleeves and a round neck. The simplicity of the cut allows for the optional surface design features. These include different shapes of bibs, additional trims and curved patch pockets, along with two different front fastenings – a button placket or a zip. The choice of fastening will determine the character of your garment, and you can play with the other optional features to suit the overall look and feel of the piece.

– PDF pattern + Printed A0 copy shop (We print out the A0 pattern sheets, but you’ll need to download the digital instructions, as we don’t print these. The PDF files will be emailed immediately after purchase, and the A0 pattern sheets will be dispatched next working day). What is Copy Shop?

Suggested fabrics: Linen, poplin, lawn, lightweight denim and twill for a ‘blouse’ version. For a heavier ‘outdoor layer’ version, you can use corduroy, denim, wool suiting or even a lightweight wool felt.

Shorter length option:

150 cm wide fabric: Sizes 4-16, 160 cm // Sizes 18-28, 200 cm.

110 cm wide fabric: Sizes 4-16, 210 cm // Sizes 18-28, 250 cm.

Longer length option:

150 cm wide fabric: Sizes 4-16, 170 cm // Sizes 18-28, 200 cm.

110 cm wide fabric: Sizes 4-16, 230 cm // Sizes 18-28, 270 cm.

Sizing: UK 4 – 28 (approx. UK 4/6 – 26, based on our standardised size chart). Please also check the designer’s size chart and finished garment measurements.

This pattern is drafted for a height of 5’8″ and a cup size ‘C’.

Notions: 30 cm strip of light-medium weight iron-on fusing // Front placket with buttons: three 15-25 mm buttons; two buttons for cuffs (can be same as for front placket or smaller) // Zip fastening: 16-18 cm closed-end zip; two 10-25 mm buttons for cuffs.
