Incredibly versatile, this mix-and-match sewing pattern includes a choice of low, midi and high legs and waistlines. Iris can be finished with fold over elastic and/or narrow stretch lace, depending on your style, making a total of 36 combinations!

A pleasure to sew, and a perfect scrap busting project, you can whip them up on a regular sewing machine. Once you’ve made your first pair, you’ll be hooked!

Suggested fabrics: 

Main fabric: Light- to medium-weight stretch knit fabric with 40-60% 4-way stretch and good recovery, such as jersey, scuba, stretch mesh, stretch velvet.

Crotch lining fabric: Small piece of cotton jersey, bamboo jersey or similar fabric with natural content.

Sizes 6 – 14: Main fabric: 0.5 m (5/8 yd) // Lining fabric: 0.25 x 0.25 m (3/8 x 3/8 yd) // Narrow stretch lace or fold over elastic (FOE): 1 m (1 1/8 yd) for waistline + 1.5 m (1 3/4 yd) for leg openings.

Sizes 16 – 24: Main fabric: 0.6 m (5/8 yd) // Lining fabric: 0.25 x 0.25 m (3/8 x 3/8 yd) // Narrow stretch lace or fold over elastic (FOE): 1.2 m (1 1/4 yd) for waistline + 1.7 m (1 7/8 yd) for leg openings.

Sizes 16 – 34

140 cm (56″) wide fabric: Main fabric: 0.6 m (5/8 yd) // Lining fabric: 0.25 x 0.25 m (3/8 x 3/8 yd) // Fold over elastic (FOE) or narrow stretch lace: Sizes 16 – 24, 1.2 m for waistline + 1.7 m for leg openings / Sizes 26 – 34, 1.4 m for waistline + 1.9 m for leg openings.

115 cm (45″) wide fabric: Main fabric: Sizes 16 – 22, 0.6 m (5/8 yd) / Sizes 24 – 34, 1 m (1 1/8 yd) // Lining fabric: 0.25 x 0.25 m (3/8 x 3/8 yd) // Fold over elastic (FOE) or narrow stretch lace: Sizes 16 – 24, 1.2 m for waistline + 1.7 m for leg openings / Sizes 26 – 34, 1.4 m for waistline + 1.9 m for leg openings.

Sizing: UK 6 – 24 or UK 16 – 34. Please check the designer’s size chart and finished garment measurements.

Notions: Narrow stretch lace, 20 – 40 mm (3/4″ – 1 1/2″) wide and/or fold over elastic (FOE), 15 – 20 mm (5/8″ – 3/4″) wide; all purpose polyester thread to match your fabric, lace and/or FOE; sewing machine with adjustable zigzag stitch and stretch needle // Optional: Overlocker (serger).

NOTE: Most stretch laces are suitable for all leg opening options and the low waist opening. If you want to use lace for the high and mid waist openings, make sure your lace has a similar stretch percentage to your main fabric (40-60%).

PDF pattern includes: Step-by-step instructions; A4/US letter print-at-home pattern (15 pages for sizes 6-24 or 18 pages for sizes 16-34); A0 copy shop pattern (1 sheet for either size).
