Grainline Studio Scout Tee

Although this the Grainline Scout Tee was released in 2011 it still is a populair pattern. The pattern is wel drafted just like the sewing instructions and illustrations. After some measuring I printed size 6. I used two types of fabric: crepe for the front and sleeves and jersey for the back. Both fabrics have almost the weight. This is important because when one fabric is heavier then the other one it will probably cause fabric shifting. Alterations: the neckline into a boatneck shape (boatneck is finished with on the bias cut tape using the overlap method) and welt breast pocket added. The crepe fabric is stitched with white yarn and the jersey fabric with black for a polished result. Overal a good pattern for a beginner with great result.

A simple summer top.
Made from a draped fabric.
Amendments made- narrowed the width of the bottom slightly to give less width. Shortened body by 2inches( I am only 5 foot 2). Overlocker all edges and just turned back securing with twin needle stitching as a quicker option than bias binding
Highly recommended for a woven staple top. Second make - and cutting out a third

This is a really satisfying, easy sew. The pattern is really well drafted and is a fun alternative to classic jersey tees as it is designed for woven fabrics. I made mine using this lightweight ikat cotton and I am really pleased with the outcome.

This is my third Scout Tee, this time made in Art Gallery cotton with a broderie anglais yoke at the front as I only had a metre of fabric. This pattern is blissfully easy, on the Grainline Studio website you can find a sew along, tips for fabric and lots of other advice. I made the bias wider and turned it to the outside to break the whiteness of the broderie anglais. Although there are no darts, this top does sit beautifully. I am a UK size14 and made the size 12. This top is a loose fit, so it's worth lying one of your tops over this before you do the side seams to gauge size. I added the yoke by sewing the main fabric to the broderie anglais and then cut the front so the main fabric started about 4cm down from the armhole and find that gives a nice line. I have also made this top in double gauze, I cut out a 14 for that one to make it looser.

The Scout Tee is such a simple pattern, but you can tell a huge amount of work has gone into it to get the perfect fit and drape.

I've made five versions now, all in the US 10, and it really is a versatile top.

My first make was a white linen version, which is just perfect for summer. Its such an easy top to wear and goes with everything.

Versions two and three (photos below) were out of cotton lawn, again perfect weight and drape for summer or for layering under jumpers.

Version four is a blush suede version for evening wear, and looks perfect with skinny jeans. I opted to underline the faux suede to make it more luxurious and silky next to the skin.

My final (for now) and most favourite, is a version made out of Nani Iro linen. I adore this fabric with its light shimmer, but it was a little to sheer for my liking. To make the colours pop, I underlined the top in black cotton lawn. This has made it a lovely weight for the colour weather, and I think it will work as an evening top.

With all versions I french seamed the sides and shoulders, as well as the arm holes. On my second and third makes I wasn't brave enough for grading back my seam allowance whilst doing the French seams, so have been very conscious of that on all other makes.

This is such a versatile top, and looks great tucked into a skirt or worn casually with jeans. I didn't need to make any pattern alternations, and will definitely be making more of these in the future.
