Buy the Shift Dress sewing pattern from The Avid Seamstress. The Shift Dress has an elegant silhouette that’s modern, sophisticated and versatile. Perfect for weddings, parties or the office, this dress will create an effortlessly chic look.

The dress has a fitted bodice, fitted sleeves and a pencil skirt with a panel at the bottom front. The back of the skirt has waist pleats and a kick pleat at the bottom. The back bodice is finished with an invisible zip. The pattern also includes optional inner pockets.

What we think: We love the simple shape of this dress and the fact it has pockets makes it a win-win for us! The seam lines at the front also make it perfect for a bit of colour blocking.

Suggested fabrics: Lightweight to medium weight woven fabrics such as chambray, crepes, silk, viscose and cottons.

Fabric requirements: 112 cm wide fabric: 2.25 - 2.8 m // 145 cm wide fabric: 1.7 - 2.1 m // Allow extra fabric to match one-way designs.

Sizing: UK 6 - 22. Please check the size chart and finished garment measurements.

Notions: Thread; 41 cm (16") invisible zipper.

The Shift Dress

I am so happy to share this review of the new pattern launch by The Avid Seamstress - The Shift Dress.
It is not the first time I have sewn an Avid Seamstress pattern - they are lovely. High quality and with lots of sensible tips and encouragement for you not only to produce a great dress, but to have a good sewing experience too.
The fabric is a stretch cotton. Not only does this have a little give which makes it a really comfortable dress, it has good recovery - so it stays in shape.
The pattern is true to size, the only alterations I made were that I shortened the bodice by 1" and the skirt by 5", but this is usually the case - I am only 5'2".
Gorgeous photos and illustrations in the instruction book help you all the way, it's a really enjoyable make.
During this make you will encounter, pleats, darts, invisible zip and a kick pleat, but they are all very well explained and as well as the written instructions, The Avid Seamstress have lots of helpful tips on the blog page of their website.
I would have like to have shared more photos with you, particularly the pretty back of the dress, but they are too high quality to upload on here - please do head on over to my blog for more pics and all the details on the dress.
Such a lovely pattern, I would highly recommend for someone looking for a smart classic shift dress with a feminine twist.
