What we think: This sweatshirt is a wardrobe staple, and we love the statement darts. Having made this ourselves, the shape is great and the darts elevate the fit.

Suggested fabrics:

Choose a medium weight knit fabric with 30 – 50% stretch. Sweatshirt jersey, terry, teddy or even light neoprene are all good options.

For the neckline, cuffs and hem, pick a rigid knit that has good recovery and 30 – 50% stretch. A firm rib knit is ideal.

The sample was made of mesh neoprene, with cotton rib kit for the ribbings.

Fabric requirementsThe fabric requirements include a 5% allowance for shrinkage. Note that the fabric consumption may be greater for fabrics with a pattern and for fabrics that need to be cut in one direction.

Super sleek sweatshirt

A friend recommended this pattern to me knowing that I love a sweatshirt. This is one with a cute design feature, long diagonal darts which give the sweater a sleek sophisticated shape which appealed to the smarter side of me. It’s slightly cropped which means it will look super with either trousers or a skirt. My measurements are bust 34, waist 32 and hips 37 so the flattering darts take the eye away from my small bust…I chose a size 10 as I like a more relaxed shape around my waist so didn’t have to make any adjustments. For my first Sloane I chose a white French Terry and made the cuffs, neck band and hem band from the same fabric. I used a 4mm satin ribbon as a stay tape on the shoulder seams. I traced my pattern and cut out my fabric very easily and used tailor tacks to mark the bust darts. It felt strange to be sewing such long low darts but the finished effect is very satisfying, nice precise darts with all notches matching. That was the only fiddly part and the rest of the sweatshirt went together very easily. I used a stretch stitch for the darts, sewing the cuff bands, neck band and hem band together and my overlocker for main seams. As you can see in the photos, the finished Sloane is rather elegant and I couldn’t be happier. I was hooked on this pattern so started my second one a few days later choosing a grey French Terry. I’m planning to sew this pattern with my refugee sewing class so needed to trace off a few different sizes anyway. I decided to size up and lower the darts. I’m pleased with the final result and feel that this gives the Sloane more of a casual feel.

This is my first Named company pattern and I will definitely try another. I know that the women at the centre will love the Syli blouse so that will be a spring term project.

Great Sweatshirt Pattern

I really enjoyed this pattern! The side darts are an easy and effective detail. I think the cuffs could be a bit deeper - I like a longer cuff personally. I did this one as a test before I make one as a gift - can’t wait to make more!

Stylish comfort

I’ve made two versions of this sweatshirt and really like it. The only change I made on the second one was to add some extra length to the cuff as the first felt a little short. This isn’t something I usually have to do.
The French darts on this are a great touch, nice to make a slightly more fitted snuggly top. It was the only slightly different feature and overall, this is a quick make.
I chose to embellish both versions: for one, I embroidered on a slogan using back stitch and for the other, I added some elaborate embroidered appliqués

Sloane Sweatshirt

This is one of the most comfortable things I own, let alone have made for myself! I finally managed to get my hands on one of Atelier Brunette's beautiful sweatshirting fabrics and chose to make a Named Sloane with it. I've hardly worn anything else since I've finished it as the fabric feels fantastic, and the pattern has nice shaping features that make it more flattering than a regular raglan style sweatshirt. One of the things I like about this pattern is the finishing stitches used for topstitching the neckline down, and the use of French darts at the sides.
100% recommended.....
