Suggested fabrics:
Self: Oilskin, dry oilskin, mid-heavy weight cotton canvas or drill, mid weight denim (8-14 oz.).
Lining: Something like a simple cotton or duck canvas.
Fabric requirements: All with or without nap.
Self: 80-110 cm (31 1/2″-43 1/2″) wide fabric: 1.2 m (1 1/2 yd) // 120 cm (47″) wide fabric: 0.9 m (1 yd) // 140-150 cm (55″-60″) wide fabric: 0.8 m (1 yd).
Lining: 80-100 cm (31 1/2″-39 1/2″) wide fabric: 1.1 m (1 1/4 yd) // 110-120 cm (43 1/2″-47″) wide fabric: 0.8 m (1 yd) // 140-150 cm (55″-60″) wide fabric: 0.6 m (3/4 yd).
Sizing: Finished measurements: Length 43 cm x Width (taken in the round) 94 cm (17″ x 37″).
Notions: 2.5 cm (1″) wide leather strap, 0.7 m (3/4 yd); four rivets; two 2.5 cm (1″) D-rings; one magnetic clasp // Alternative to leather: 2.5 cm (1″) wide webbing, 1 m (1 1/4 yd).

I love this pattern - it’s easy to sew and is my favourite day to day bag. It has great capacity and lovely details.

Pattern: The Jack Tar by Merchant & Mills: This copious bucket bag has space for an almost infinite amount of stuff. Fully lined with 3 divided internal pockets. The most useful of bags.
Sizing: one size only
Fabric: 1 m of black water-resistant fabric and for the lining 1 m cotton twill
Notions: The Jack Tar Bag making kit (1 D rings, 4 rivets, 1 veg tan leather strap, 1 magnetic snap)
Modifications: I chose to make pocket both inside and outside. In the end, I was forced to recut the straps and facing (for this I used cotton that I interfaced with heavy interfacing) because my machine did not want to sew over more than 2 layers of the waterproof fabric no matter what I tried.
Fit: n/a
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?: yes
Watch out for: if you use a fabric that’s too thick for the outside you might have issues later with the straps or the facing. In this case, consider using a different less think fabric for the facing.

Wanted to make myself a bag to take on holiday that was robust enough to cope with being dragged around from aeroplane to aeroplane and roomy enough to hold all the stuff I needed to carry. Loved that this bag had some interesting details but was still a big blank canvas on the outer shell for me to embellish as I wanted (hadn't done any hand sewing for ages but really fancied doing some embroidery to make it more personal)... Pattern itself very straightforward and easy to follow, some interesting techniques and, embroidery aside, it took just an afternoon to out together. Feels like a really sturdy piece so think this bag will last a good while before needing replaced. I used dry oilskin from Merchant and Mills and a grey duck canvas that I'd bought from them yonks ago following the publication of their first book. I would always recommend M&M patterns - I've made several and have yet to find any downside really.
