Buy the Bastion Culottes sewing pattern from Jennifer Lauren Handmade. The Bastion Culottes combine everything we love about 1940s sailor pants, 1930s beach pyjamas and the modern A-line skirt. Bastion features a sailor-style front button opening with deep, roomy pockets cleverly integrated into the waistline. Gently fitted at the natural waist, the legs drape effortlessly down over the hips in a breezy flared silhouette. With two length options — falling to mid-calf or above the knee — you can style your culottes with fitted knit tops or loose button-up blouses tucked in or tied at the waist. Throw a cropped cardigan over the top for cooler climes.
Bastion has been styled here with the Gable Top, Hunter Tank and Aisling Blouse.

Suggested fabrics: Light to mid-weight woven fabric with some drape. For summer, choose cotton lawn, voile, poplin, linen or chambray. For winter, choose mid-weight denim, pinwale (baby) cord, flannel, wool or wool blends. For the pocket lining, use a lightweight woven remnant - cotton voile, lawn, linen or chambray makes a great lining.
Fabric requirements: Extra fabric may be required for pattern/print matching or adding length.

I love this pattern and have had so many compliments when wearing my culottes. They’re so comfortable to wear but look so stylish paired with a cosy jumper, top, blouse.... the possibilities are endless with styling.
When worn they can be mistaken for a skirt because of the fullness you get from the huge pattern pieces. They feel swishy and cool to wear and really do add something wonderful to your wardrobe. They’re great for all seasons too - I’ve paired mine with an over sized jumper and wooly tights for the colder weather.
The pockets are a fabulous size - as a teacher I’ve been able to stuff toys, pens, post it notes, fruit, tissues and all sorts in and still have plenty of room! The construction of the pockets and waistband is really clever and makes for a wonderful design feature.
There are four buttons on each pocket that act as the closure - which means no fiddly zip. I have found you need quite sturdy and decent sized buttons as they hold the culottes up and can add a pop of colour of you want to.
They are high waisted but I have found this means the tummy area feels comfortable. I suffer from bloating but wearing the culottes has been fine and still very comfortable. I’ve made two pairs so far and I can see another pair in my wardrobe soon.
There are two different lengths when making the culottes - this version is the longer length. The pattern prices are huge so on word of warning is to ensure the fabric you use is wide enough!
The instructions are written so well and really guide you through the making process. They were an enjoyable project to work on.

I'm probably the last one adding a pair of culottes to my wardrobe, but the Bastion culottes were worth waiting for! They are my style and the construction with the pockets and buttoning is very clever. The instructions are clear and easy to follow.
They are made in an ex-designer cotton/linen fabric and I think the fabric was very suitable for this pattern. I'm already planning to make another pair for summer and maybe a pair for winter in some kind of lightweight wool/wool blend fabric.
I opted for size 14 since my waist size is between 12 and 14 according to the size chart. Since I'm 157 cm tall, I choosed to make the shorter version but adding 6cm to the length (almost between the long and short version that is). When the culottes were finished I moved the buttons on the waistband a few centimeters on each side to make it narrower - next time I'll take them in at the back seam instead.
I'm very happy with this garment, it was fun to make and I finished it in a day! It is marked as a confident beginner-pattern, which I think is correct. No zipper, no difficult techniques - just easy sewing.
