Buy the Charleston Dress sewing pattern from Hey June Handmade. The Charleston Dress is a fitted knit dress perfect for dressing up or down. Make a casual floral version with the ruffle sleeve or a classic little black dress with stretch faux leather panelling. Seven sleeve length options make this dress work appropriate and suitable for four season wear. View A features a casual A-line skirt with deep scooped pockets and front pleats. View B has a slimmer silhouette with no pockets or pleats. Both views have an optional semi-exposed zipper at the back.

Suggested fabrics: Heavier weight stable knits with at least 30% stretch such as cotton/spandex, double knit, ponte, interlock, and liverpool knit.
Fabric requirements: 55" (140 cm) or wider fabric: View A (sleeveless, ruffle, square, short, or elbow length sleeves), 2 yd (1.8 m) // View B (sleeveless, ruffle, or square sleeves), 1 3/4 yd (1.6 m) // Views A and B (3/4 or long sleeves), 2 1/4 yd (2.1 m) // Allow extra fabric for pattern matching.
Sizing: XS - 3X (approx. UK 8 – 22). Please check the size chart and finished garment measurements.
Notions: 1.5" x 19" strip of lightweight non-stretch fusible interfacing; 18" zipper // Optional: Washaway hem tape or glue stick; clear 3/8" elastic.
PDF pattern includes: Instructions; US letter/A4 print-at-home pattern (52 pages); 36″ wide copy shop pattern (1 sheet); A0 copy shop pattern (3 sheets). This pattern has layers so you can print only the size(s) you need.

I chose a flowery punta di roma for my View A (a-line skirt with pockets) version of the Charleston dress. It was a breeze to sew, not just because the fabric was very cooperative, but also because the instructions were great and detailed.
What I particularly liked about the .pdf about how it indicates which pages to print for the skirt and sleeve options of your liking. It wouldn’t have been the first time I would’ve printed lots of pages for the wrong view…
These are the things I adapted from the original pattern:
- As my punta di roma has enough stretch, I omitted the zipper. So I simply cut the back piece on the fold of the fabric.
- I didn’t add the neck band because I liked the neckline without it better. I simply used a strip of black stretchy viscose to bind it and then turned it under.
- First I went for the long sleeves (I get cold easily). That felt a bit too matronly for me with the flowery print, so I shortened them to elbow length.
I really love the outcome- the dress wears like pajamas but it’s classy enough for a fancy party! I’m already planning to make another one, this time a View B in a neoprene/scuba fabric.
