Buy the Regatta Dress sewing pattern from Alice & Co Patterns. The Regatta Dress is easy to make, fun to sew and a delight to wear - a frock as suited to romping through a field of wildflowers as sitting eating oysters in a seaside bistro! The fully lined bodice has a nifty neckline threaded through with ribbons, which tie at the shoulders to create pretty straps. It buttons all the way down the back giving a bold vintage feel. The skirt is a simple gathered rectangle with optional big patch pockets.
The dress is drafted to be fairly loose through the bust and waist to give a relaxed look. The final bodice shaping is determined by how you arrange the neckline along the ribbons. If you like a closer fit through the bust/waist it's easy to take in the bodice down the side seams, or cinch in with a belt.

Suggested fabrics: Dress weight cotton, seersucker, lightweight denim, cotton shirting or African waxed cotton - this is a dress crying out to be made in a vibrant print.
Fabric requirements: You will need 2.8 m (3 yd) of fabric, at least 140 cm (55") wide. This is based on an approx. knee-length skirt and includes enough to self line the bodice. Alternatively, use 50 cm (20") of fine cotton lawn to line the bodice. (You might need 1 m (1 1/4 yd) if the lawn is narrow.)
Sizing: UK 6 – 22. Please check the size chart.
Notions: 2 m (2 1/4 yd) of 4 - 5 cm (1 1/2" - 2") wide ribbon (not too stiff, or make your own ties in matching or contrasting fabric); ten (plus a spare!) 2.5 - 3 cm (1" - 1 1/4") diameter buttons; lightweight interfacing to reinforce the button stand, strip measuring approx. 20 x 90 cm (8" x 1 yd).
PDF pattern includes: Instructions; A4 print-at-home pattern (12 pages); US letter print-at-home pattern (13 pages); A0 copy shop pattern (1 sheet). Note: You must print this pattern in colour.

I helped test the Regatta dress last summer and I was taken with its summery, vintage feel. It has only a few pieces in very simple shapes and the fit of the bodice is by adjusting the ties which slot through a channel along the top which gathers it up. Once you’ve got it adjusted to your liking it's probably a good idea to stitch your ribbons in position so that they don't keep shifting about while you’re wearing it. I’m not very full-busted but I suspect this is a bodice that could need an FBA so that it gives better coverage in the front. The skirt is simply either gathered or pleated onto the waist seam, and there are large patch pockets too. One other nice detail is the buttons run all the way down the back, although that does mean I have to put the dress on back to front, button it up then swivel it round! It’s better if you’ve got someone in the house to help you with that bit! You could always use fake buttons for the skirt section, although you do still need to be able to get into, and do up, the bodice. The bodice is already lined as part of making the ribbon tie channels but I also chose to put a simple A-line cotton lawn lining in the skirt, this doesn’t add bulk at the waist seam. I also added a hook and eye at the waist seam so that the button and buttonhole at that point isn’t taking all the strain. I used a contrast Grosgrain ribbon for my ties but you could make your own from self-fabric too. A pretty summer style which is great for swooshing in!
