The Online Sewing Weekender IS BACK on the 13th & 14th May 2023. The event will again take place online and will feature two days of online content for attendees to watch and participate in, as they work on a sewing project at home.

Over the weekend, we’ll have a series of informal vlogs from bloggers and makers plus longer talks, live zoom sessions to chat to fellow attendees. We’re really excited about The Online Sewing Weekender and hope you are too! Previously an annual in-person event in Cambridge (2016 – 2019), bringing 90 sewists together for a weekend of informal sewing, socialising, workshops and talks, the Sewing Weekender moved online in 2020 and hasn’t looked back. We have always given a proportion of ticket sales to charity and this year we are looking forward to supporting Furnishing Futures and the Rights of Women

The Schedule

An email will be sent to you at 6am on Saturday the 13th May. This will contain the full schedule for the weekend, and links to all of the video content.

All the content for the weekend will be available immediately, so you can dip in and out and watch it as you wish. All of the videos will remain available throughout the weekend. The videos will remain available after the Sewing Weekender too, so if you aren’t free that weekend you can still purchase a ticket and enjoy at your leisure.

• Portia Lawrie the guru of the refashioning world is talk robes. This chatty tutorial will be showing how one technique can be used across a variety of garments so that you can refashion like a pro.
• Madalynne from Madalynne Intimates the incredible lingerie designer is here to chat through bra fitting 101. Everything from knowing how to measure yourself properly to how and why you should make a proper toile. For those wanting to dip their toe into the wonderful world of handmade lingerie, this is for you.
• Tabara from Basketry is showing us how to sew with rope so that we can make our own baskets. Once you’ve grasped the technique a whole new world of homewares will be at our fingertips, so that we can all finally have a tidy and organised sewing space… well maybe!
• Zenzie Tinker is here to talk to us about fabric conservation. An ex-museum conservator at the V&A, now has a thriving business conserving old and new fabrics with her team of highly skilled craftspeople.
• Helen’s Closet is here to talk quilts! Have you ever wanted to dip your toe into the wonderful world of quilting but are unsure where to start? Helen is here to talk you through a simple quilting project. There will be a free pattern to get yourself started on your quilting journey too.
• Juliet Uzor & Lina King: have joined forces to talk to us about the wonderful world of Ankara. If you love the bold colourful fabric as much as us then you are in for a treat.
• Alice and Co are back again with a fantastic historical talk. Stitches Through Time: An Excursion Through 130 years of Vintage Sewing Machines and Patterns.
• Birgitta Helmersson is passionate about zero-waste sewing. In this tutoiral we are getting a sneak peek at one of the projects in the NEW BOOk that is out later this year. She will be showing you how cut and sew the zero waste TEE using her unique paperless method by marking and cutting your pieces directly on your fabric.
• Alison Smith is here to ensure we become best friends with our overlocker. This tutorial will cover all the tricky bits and teach you how to go round corners, sewing the perfect circle, pintucks, hems and much more
• Tammy Handmade is going to get us using up all our fabric scraps… yes really! This tutorial is going to guide you through a simple patchwork structure so that you can get creative and make beautiful one-of-a-kind tote bags.
• Self Assembly Required is here to help us get our hack on! Have you ever wanted to hack a sewing pattern but were unsure where to start? Well Emily is going to show us some simple neckline hacks that’ll get your creative juices flowing.

10% of proceeds from this event will go to these brilliant charities:

Furnishing Futures: this charity helps women and children who are escaping domestic abuse to start to rebuild their homes. Many are thrown into poverty and are simply unable to purchase basic furniture like beds, curtains or sofas. We all know what a huge impact where you live has on your mental health and we are delighted to be able to support them this year.

Rights of Women: are a women’s charity working in a number of ways to help women through the law. Their services aim to provide women with the legal advice and information they need to understand and use the law and their legal rights and increase women’s access to justice.

FAQ and policies

Who comes to The Sewing Weekender?

We welcome everyone to join The Online Sewing Weekender from around the world! Makers of all abilities from will be joining us from beginners to the advanced.

What do I need to join in?

You will need internet access and a computer/phone or tablet. You will need access to YouTube, Zoom and Instagram to take part in all the activities. An Instagram account is recommended; no account is required for Zoom or YouTube. If you want to sew over the weekend you will need access to a sewing machine and your usual supplies. We also recommend you are well stocked with tea and cake for the duration!

How long do I have to watch the videos and join the activities?

An email will be sent to you at 6am UK time (BST; 05:00 UTC) on Saturday the 12th May. This will contain the full schedule for the day, and links to all of the video content. All of the videos will remain available throughout the weekend, so you can dip in and out as you wish. The videos will remain available after the Sewing Weekender if you don’t manage to watch all of them at the time.

Cancelation and Refund Policy

Refunds are not issued after payment is submitted. Tickets are non-refundable with 10% of proceeds being donated to charity. Please ensure that you are available to attend prior to booking.

Photography

Photographing and/or videotaping of activities will take place throughout the weekend. The Fold Line and English Girl at Home may publish the photos and recordings online or in other places for marketing and sales purposes. Attendees agree that their picture and sound may be used by the organisers and their partners without granting any additional permissions.
