Weston shorts

Summer is right around the corner. Sometimes your average shorts are just too casual, and you need a little vintage style in your day.

Weston shorts are high waisted, with front and back darts to hug your shape. The tailored waistband has a zippered fly and can be finished with jeans buttons or sew on buttons. These shorts can be sewn up surprisingly quickly; and if you’ve never sewn a zippered fly before, you are in for a very pleasant surprise.

Choose a red denim for a fun, casual style, or go with a white linen for a classic look. Experiment with firm, tightly woven fabrics such as gaberdine, twill or even light weight canvas.

    Weston shorts

The good: The Weston shorts have a flattering high-waisted design that makes my waist look trim. I sewed them up in cotton twill, whose body and weight were a good choice for this shorts sewing pattern. I think these shorts would be stylish sewn in faux suede and worn with tights and boots!

The less than good: The high waist and long zipper create a poochy bump between the waistband and crotch. I think this is pretty common for high-waisted designs; the bump even shows up on Seamwork’s model (see my side-by-side comparison pic). The waistband is tall (2 inches), and it folds down over the buttons even though I’m confident I choose the correct size. I think if you moved up the top button a 1/4 inch, you could mitigate the fold.

What’s more: The shorts pattern didn’t include pockets, so I added two welt pockets to the back. It was my first time adding rear welt pockets to a pattern with darts in the back, and there was a lot of trial and error. My patience paid off, though!
