The Liberty Skirt

Amy Butler

The Liberty Skirt started as an over-the-top couture design to showcase the Seven Wonders fabrics on an exaggeratedly tall mannequin. The ridiculously long skirt got so much attention and I found that everyone wanted it that way! Now, of course, we’ve designed it at the studio to make as long as you like. Just add as many layers to the cake as you feel for a knee, shin, ankle or floor mop fit! Based on the towering Statue of Liberty that enthralled me as a child, and still inspires me to this day.

4 out of 5 Skip the part about marking the 3/4' overlap line.

I looked at that part of the pattern instructions for days and could not make heads of tails of what the pattern maker was talking about. By that time, I had already marked every piece for that overlap. Finally, I just stitched the pieces together as one normally would. Then later, I got a close up of one of the skirts and I could see what they were talking about. This 3/4″ piece sticks straight out on the finished side of the skirt. It is not a good look on an already-complicated skirt. Skip this step and all the headaches that result from it. I hope to love this skirt when I am done. Another day or so.
