Simplicity Plus Size’ Shirt Dress 8084

One of the very first few big 4 patterns that I’ve ever made, this dress has been one of my most favorite and most worn makes this summer. I opted for the short length instead of the maxi, which comes just over the knee.
The pattern is fairly easy to make, but I found some parts a bit challenging to understand, like the construction of the hidden button placket. Because of this feature, you may find the order of construction a bit strange at first, as you are instructed to first sew the buttonholes. Thankfully, Mimi G has a step by step video sewalong on the Simplicity YouTube channel, so as soon as I had a look at that, everything made complete sense (I also blame my initial confusion on the fact that I tried to sew it all at once late at night, haha!)
As for the size, I went for a size 8 because the drawstring at the waist means that the garment is actually a bit roomy and you can cinch it in using the tie. It fits me perfectly.
At first I sew the sleeve tabs, but found the sleeves to be too long for my taste so I unpicked them, chopped off the sleeve and just hemmed in in the usual way.
The pattern features some really lovely details, like the gathering at the front yoke, the hidden button placket, the curved hem and the drawstring. The use of a drapey fabric (mine is a viscose) meant that I had to take my time while sewing it, making sure that everything aligns, but the final result is 100% worth the effort in my opinion 🙂
