Birkin Flares

Baste and Gather

Inspired by the style of 1970s fashion icon Jane Birkin, the Birkin Flares feature a high waist, trim fit to the knees and a fashion-forward, flared leg. The Birkin Flares work wonders on all figures and make even the puniest of bottoms look fantastic (ask me how I know!).  Tall or short, thin or curvy, somewhere in the middle…I haven’t seen anyone who doesn’t look great in these jeans!

This pattern comes in waist sizes 24-35 and is suitable for the intermediate sewist. (Jeans are NOT hard to sew, and I’ll help you through the tricky parts! Promise!)

I love these jeans, and making them was a dream due to the well written instructions. I used a heavy weight stretch drill from Walthamstow market, and a zip cannibalized from an old pair of jeans, so the whole project was a bargain. Check out more details and pictures at

Fabric used: Charcoal denim with 2% lycra from Croft Mill Fabrics
Instructions: Instruction leaflet full of clear directions and illustratons. I found it all pretty simple to follow and really appreciated the obvious level of research that’s gone into producing the instructions.
Pattern: You can choose to just print the size you want, or print all of them. I chose to print all the sizes and picked the copy shop version. I hate sticking PDF pages together.
Fitting alterations: I made the 35. Measurements indicated I could grade to the smaller size for hip, but I new I’d need every centimetre over my bum & tum. All I needed to change was to add 5mm on the inseam from knee up to crotch and to scoop out the back seam by about the same. I also needed 8cm less in the length.
The jeans turned out pretty much how I had imagined, or better! I love the flare and even though I chopped 8cm off the bottom, haven’t lost any of the width necessary. Fit over the bum is superb. I would most certainly recommend this pattern if you’re into flares.
