Notes

This was a wearable muslin in a fabric I enjoy, but was cheap enough to sacrifice in case the fit wasn’t to my liking. I made the XL without a zipper because I had read online that it had lots of ease, and that was a good decision (and saves me from finding a matching zipper in my house, which is a feat)! So the muslin was mainly to make sure I could fit everything over my chest, because the ties nip in the waist and take away the extra ease, leaving a nice skirt flounce behind.

Even though I made the XL, I probably could have gotten away with making a L without a zipper! How annoying is it that the Big 4 patterns don’t usually list the final garment measurements aside from length?! It would be easier to know which size to cut and how much ease to expect….

A few minor pattern errors: there’s no mention of topstitching the ties, yet they really need this because of all the pulling from knotting. And it has you baste the waist tie pleat longways, but is never sewn later nor removed, which I found odd. I sewed the backside of the pleat so it had a permanent fold…I’m not   sure if this is what the pattern intended, but I can’t see why it needed a long basting line otherwise. Next time, I’d shorten that sewn pleat by 1″. I believe it is 2-2.5″ in the pattern, and in the drawing the pleat foldline looks shorter.

Modifications

-The waist felt quite low, so even though I have a long-ish torso for my height, I raised the shoulders up by 1″ after sewing all seams except the side seam. I like the fit much better this way.

-Widened and dropped the neckline. Not sure by how much, but it was far too tight before raising the shoulders, so I reckon I lowered it around 2″ from the original pattern pieces.

-I added 3″ to the tunic length, because other tunic versions I saw online looked like a shirt length. This way I can wear it with leggings without my butt completely hanging out!

-I graded the back pieces to be a bit wider at the hem because they looked too narrow compared to the front’s drape.

-Omitted back zipper, and instead just sewed back pieces together.

-Next time I will make the front ties longer and maybe have them go to a point faster. The tie looks less effortless at the length provided on a larger waist like mine, compared to the twiglike model in the drawing.
