Another win in my series of ‘I need to sew trousers, but it’s scary’ patterns! If you want to sew some separates but fitting frightens you, I can definitely recommend the Tania culottes!
To get the maximum ‘looks like a skirt’ effect, I chose to make my culottes from some lovely drapey viscose twill. Pros: Beautiful movement, comfortable to wear, soft and delightfully swishy. Cons: Snagged a fair bit while sewing and takes AGES to iron.
This was the first time I had used a Megan Nielsen pattern and I found the quality of instructions to be very good. They were easy to follow and I had no problems with any of the steps.
I made the size 8 to fit a 28′ waist – next time I would make the size 6 as I think a 27′ waist would sit higher up closer to my narrowest point and therefore be more flattering. I wanted to make view C, but didn’t have quite enough fabric (I had 2.5m), so I cut about halfway between view C and view D. I’m only 5′ 4″ and I think this is a nice length on me.
I’d love to make these again and other than sizing down, the only other change I would make is choosing a fabric that doesn’t crease as much – something like a crepe would probably be much better. I have worn them a lot since I made them – they looked nice with tights, boots and a chunky knit during the winter and I’ve enjoyed dressing them down with flip-flops and a t-shirt as the weather has warmed up.
