Simple to sew and a joy to wear!

A review of Tilly and the Buttons Indigo Top and Dress

Tilly and her team of buttons have once again absolutely nailed the beginner level market with the Indigo smock. They have also cleverly ensured more experienced sewists are interested in the pattern by adding optional details such as the flounced sleeve and pretty gathers. Something for everyone!

I didn’t quite have enough of the fabric I originally planned to use for my Indigo dress, but luckily I had 2m of another viscose tucked away in my stash. I was initially worried that this very lightweight fabric was too sheer for a dress, but it’s turned out fine! The fabric is beautiful quality and the incredible drape and fluidity suits the garment perfectly.

As we all expect from Tilly’s patterns, the Indigo instructions are faultless. Everything is brilliantly explained and illustrated and there is a wealth of knowledge to pick up along the way for those new to sewing.

I have made over 25 Tilly and the Buttons patterns and I always fit pretty perfectly into the size 3 (I am a UK size 8/10 and my measurements are 33.5″/27.5″/38″). The only slight alteration I made was to take up a 4cm hem rather than 2cm and overall I am very satisfied with the fit of my Indigo dress. I know some seamstresses are keen to make minor tweaks to get their garments fit them perfectly, but that takes the joy out of sewing for me and I rarely bother!

I absolutely love the finished garment and it’s every bit as comfy and wearable as I’d hoped, while also looking really feminine and pretty! I’d like to have a go at making the top version of the Indigo next, adding the flounced sleeve and all the gathers!
