Perfect entry to knit

Tilly’s book is a great introduction for all things knit. I didn’t think I needed half the information inside, but I find myself turning to it for hints and tips on a regular basis.

I’ve made the Stella hoodie for myself and my mother, the Frankie tee, and several Freyas.

Stella

Stella came together really easily – the trickiest bit was getting the edges of the hood to match up at the neckline. But the instructions were really clear and I basted it first, so it went in without any fuss. I really love some of the details in this make. I made the hood ties from the curling selvedge, and I lined the hood and pocket with some leftover zig zag jersey from another project, which matches perfectly.

Based on the finished garment measurements I made an 8 but should have sized down to a 7, and I managed to fit the whole thing in to 2 metres of fabric. Originally, it was a little longer than you see here, but I felt it was a little frumpy and chopped a good 5 inches off.

Freya

I’ve made three or four Freyas now. The pattern is very clearly explained and I found it really simple to put together. I basted some of the trickier bits like the arms and the neckline on my sewing machine before I overlocked it, and I found that it made the process almost entirely stress free.

My first version was a size 8 but I sized down to a 7 for the next. The fir varies a lot depending on the drape of the fabric but I’ve generally always added 5 inches to the bottom – this pattern is drafted for people much shorter than I!

Frankie

Frankie comes together easily and is a great stash buster. I have lots of plans to make more. It has a very distinct curve at the waist which I will take out of my next version as unfortunately I am nowhere near as curvy as the Tilly block!
