New favourite shirt pattern alert!

A review of Helen's Closet Gilbert Top

I was over the moon when I saw this pattern release as it’s very like the La Maison Victor Bruna short which sadly isn’t available for purchase in the UK.

As I had a lot of this fabric (originally purchased for another pattern), I decided to lengthen it to a dress. I almost always toile but needed a quick fix and decided to just go for it, after a couple of flat adjustments.

My measurements put me as a UK size 12 in Helen’s Closet patterns (I’m usually a 10) but after looking at the finished garment measurements, I sized down to a UK 10, grading from an 8 at the shoulder. I also did a 1.5cm narrow shoulder adjustment. I usually do 2-3cm but I’ve never done a NSA on a yoked garment before and wanted to play it safe.

As well as lengthening it to a dress and tweaking the fit at the shoulders, I used French seams throughout, added piping to the back yoke, and shortened the sleeves by approx. 6cm.

A few people have said this was a “quick make” which I certainly didn’t find to be the case but I’ve really enjoyed slowing down and taking more time over my projects in lockdown and I hope to carry this forward.

The amazing lemon fabric is from Like Sew Amazing and is available here, and you can read more about my Gilbert dress in my blog post. Finally, I feel it would remiss of me not to plug the Instagram Reel I made as I’m rather proud of it!
