A review of How to Do Fashion No. 7 Vanløse Top/Trousers

Reviewed by Sewrendipity on 14th June, 2019

Gifted pattern

Pattern Description:
This trouser suit pattern is a set composed of a soft feminine blouse and a pair of elegant trousers. The top can be worn with the trousers as a suit, or separately. The shape of the high waist trousers is easy to sew and fits in the most flattering way.

This is a top and trouser set, but the review is just for the top.

Pattern Sizing:

34 to 48, I sewed a size 38

For the record, my measurements are:

Hips: 98 cm (38.5in)
Waist: 72 cm (28,5in)
Bust 88cm (34.5in)
Cup B/C
Height: 1.72m/5.6in

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?

Yes, it looked exactly the same. As an aside, the photography on the company’s website is beautiful, so you get a pretty good idea of what the end result would be.

Were the instructions easy to follow?

Yes, the instructions are easy to follow, but it’s a very simple pattern so you don’t need a lot of handholding. Please note that even if you get a paper pattern, it does not come with printed instructions, but you will have to go to the company’s website to read them. I actually prefer this, as it saves paper and you can navigate through different sections much easier.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?

I liked that it’s a simple, but elegant pattern. The idea of transforming the bust dart into shoulder pleats was quite appealing. It also suits my pear shape really well, because it emphasises the waist and adds a bit of volume to my upper body, making me look more hour-glass than pear.

Fabric Used:

I used a heavyweight poly crepe. It has a nice hand and drape, which I think is really required for this pattern.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:

The pattern fit me perfectly right out of the pack. I only took 1” from the bottom hem, as I thought it was a bit too long.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?

Too many patterns, not enough time is the tragedy of a sewer’s life, isn’t it? I am very happy with how this came out, but probably one version of it in my wardrobe is about enough .

Conclusion: It’s a very nice pattern, well drafted and easy to assemble. I also think it’s very flattering especially for hourglass and pear-shaped ladies. The designer is industry trained and you can tell from the quality of the drafting.
