Gaia coat – Named Patterns

I’ve had this fabric for over a year cut out in my wip pile and finally got round to sewing the Gaia Coat. I chose this pattern for my first coat because I love Named Patterns and I thought it would be relatively easy as no fitting is required as it’s ‘oversized’.

I used two wool fabrics, one a mohair and the other a Melton boiled wool from Fabworks and I used a navy acetate lining.

I found the pattern easy to follow and it came together as expected and quickly. I didn’t make any changes to the size 12-14, which my measurements fit into. Named Patterns are drafted for someone 4 inches taller than myself, however I decided not to shorten the length as I wanted it to hit mid to lower thigh which it does, to keep out the wind.

I’m happy with how it’s turned out, and I have been reaching for it. However, I think I would like a more fitted silhouette for my next coat. I’d say its suitable for a confident beginner, and I would recommend it. I love the colour blocking options avaliable and how you can play around with it to give the look of collar.
