Fifi Pyjamas!

Reviewed by Voolenvine on 22nd April, 2020

I was a newbie sewist when I first attempted making this pattern. Long story short, I had no clue what I was doing and literally had to cut myself out of the camisole after trying it on.

Fast-forward six years later … It was great revisiting a pattern I struggled with as a beginner and getting to appreciate how far I’ve come as (mostly) self-taught sewist!

SIZING + FIT

Once again, I didn’t have to fiddle with fit, I’m a bit pair-shaped, so I made a size 2 camisole and size 4 shorts. Since they’re pajamas, and supposed to have a bit of ease, everything fit’s great!

MODIFICATIONS

Since I was working with special fabric (Liberty of London), I made it extra special by adding lace trim around the neckline. I applied it just as you would picot elastic trim.

The bias tape straps are clever, but I noticed a small bend or “pucker” forms where the tape extends past the top point of the cup. Looking at photos of other finished Fifi Pyjamas online, I think this is how the straps are supposed to sit. I wasn’t into it, so I just cut the straps off, and stitched them back down at a different angle, so they lay flat across my shoulders. Much better!

I also skipped out on hemming the shorts with bais tape. Since I wasn’t using contrasting fabric, I just hemmed the shorts same as the camisole, with a 5/8″ narrow hem.

And since I’m not a fan of elastic waistbands, I used the leftover bias tape as a drawstring.

CLOSING THOUGHTS

Would I recommend this pattern to an absolute beginner? Maybe not. But if you are a beginner, don’t let that stop you. I mean, it didn’t stop me! Even though this project didn’t turn out the way I’d hoped the first time around, you can’t beat the feeling you get revisiting a few years later and nailing it!
