A review of Closet Core Patterns Sienna Maker Jacket

This is a fantastic pattern for anyone who is keen to sew a coat or jacket, but may be intimidated by complicated linings. It’s actually pretty straightforward to make, so would be a great entry-level jacket!

The fabric I used was some deadstock that I bought from Merchant and Mills last year. It’s a heavy-weight, tightly woven cotton with a beautifully smooth finish. It had sat in my stash for over a year because it wasn’t suitable for what I originally intended to make with it. While watching the Foldline’s spring edition of ‘Sew the Trends’ I realise it was perfect for a trench coat or mac – thanks, Kate!

The trickiest part of the make was choosing which size to make. I wanted to be able to wear my jacket over several layers, but I didn’t want it to be too oversized. I usually make a size 6 in Closet Case patterns, but the fit of the jacket is designed to be relaxed, so I opted for the size 4. This was the best fit for my 33″ bust and the adjustable wrap style meant my waist and hip measurements (27″ and 38″ respectively) weren’t that important. There is still plenty of room in the jacket for layering, so I think I made the right decision to size down.

I found the instructions really clear, detailed and easy to follow during this make and the jacket came together really nicely with no problems. I didn’t make any alterations at all, but if I made the jacket again I would probably shorten the sleeves by about an inch, as they are quite long for me.

As the jacket is unlined, I decided to use this opportunity to have a go at binding the seams instead of using an overlocker to finish them. I used some beautiful Liberty bias tape and also made a matching hanging loop. This added a lot of time to the project, but the finished result is so special and it was 100% worth it! (There are a couple of photos of my seam finish on my Instagram grid if you are interested.)

The finished garment is everything I hoped for and I’m thrilled with it! I love the utility vibe and all the pocket details. The waist tie looks fabulous and also means you can get a nice silhouette whatever you are wearing underneath! I know I will reach for this jacket again and again and it will be a well-worn wardrobe staple for many years.
