This pattern is rated “easy’ and would suit an adventurous beginner with some experience because it’s a simple shirt shape which is lifted by the addition of fan-like pin tucks to the front and sleeves. These require a little patience to mark (time well spent) and need precision-sewing to stitch which is a good test of skill to any dressmaker who wants to raise their game. There is a two-part collar which is the other test for a novice on this shirt but the instructions are clear and straightforward so if you take it carefully you shouldn’t go wrong. Making the buttonholes correctly, and placing them well is the final test although there is a placement piece to help with this if you need it.
The pattern pieces went together well but then I’d expect that from a mainstream brand like Butterick.
I’m a UK size 10-12 in RTW but I made a 14 because this matches my body measurements better, I didn’t make any adjustments as I don’t particularly have any ‘quirks’. I used a nice cotton poplin from Ditto fabrics in Brighton which I’d pre washed.
I’d recommend this as this is a comfortable blouse that would look lovely in a range of fabrics (there is a sleeveless version too) although if you’re fuller-busted you’d probably need to lengthen it to remain flattering and not look too short. I shall probably make it again-if you already know what you’re doing it won’t take longer than a few hours.
