Betty Dress – Sew Over It

A review of Sew Over It Betty Dress

This pattern is rated for beginners and I would agree with that in some respects. It’s beautifully drafted and a straightforward sew with some nice techniques around the facing and invisible zip.

My reserve is around the fitting: I’ve rarely had as much difficulty getting a good fit on a bodice. It seems the SOI block is much, much broader than I am; it’s unusual for me to have to make the number of adjustments I did, but you can see on the red and white dress below that the neckline was much, much wider than the pattern envelope suggests even after doing a narrow shoulder adjustment. I would also say that there is a fair amount of ease in the dress at the suggested pattern size.

Don’t let it put you off, the final version is fab, much swishing of full skirts has ensued, but just make a very careful toile or three before you cut into the good stuff!
