I cut a size 16 straight from the pattern and the fit is good. Could be slightly more fitted around the hips but I think this is a variable depending on the stretch of the fabric and also whether you avoid stretching out the hem (I didn’t!)
Neckline could also be a tad more fitted but I think the same goes.
I opted for the 3/4 sleeve option and ruching on both sleeve and bust. The sleeve length is good and hits me just above the elbow.
There were a couple of things new to me with this pattern – it was my first project with a knit fabric, I’ve never done elastic ruching before and I’ve never made a neckband before.
The neckband instructions confused me until I realised what I was actually making, but as long as you follow the instructions through it will turn out right! The ruching tips are good, I think it’s just worth practising a bit first because it is really a knack of getting the stretch right on the elastic as you sew it. I think my sleeves worked out better than my bust ruching and guess which I did first (and had three or four attempts at!).
I don’t have an overlocker so I just used a zig zag stitch for hemming. I used a walking foot but this only partly mitigated the wavy hem syndrome and it’s definitely less effective the more hem you have to sew (sleeves are ok but hip not so much). I tried a stabilising tape but this really upset my machine and it kept jamming, so I don’t know what other options there are. I also am not a fan of the edge of the material curling up inside the garment so next time I will try to fold under or catch the edge in the hem stitching.
Most of the construction time was spent on the ruching, puzzling over the neck band or testing different stitches, so once you have done this top once I think subsequent constructions could be quite fast, maybe just a few hours.
