A lovely layering piece

This is a nice simple pattern for those used to working with stretch fabrics and is a super speedy make, particularly if you have an overlocker.

I used a sweatshirting fabric from Ray Stitch for my jumper – I can’t remember the blend exactly and it’s no longer listed on their website, but I know there is some wool and viscose in there. I checked carefully to make sure the stretch percentage was suitable for the pattern as it’s quite a close fitting garment.

The instructions were clear and easy to follow, although I didn’t need to refer to them that often as I have made several similar garments and the construction is very basic.

I made the size small as it matched my measurements best (33″/27.5″/38″) and I’m mostly happy with the fit. However, I have found that the sleeves from the elbow to the wrist are incredibly tight! I would definitely adjust this in future to make it more comfortable to wear.

The only change I made was to add cuffs to the wrist instead of turning up the hem. This was simply because I knew my regular sewing machine wouldn’t like the thick fluffy fabric and this way I could sew the entire thing on my overlocker! I made narrow cuffs that match the width of the neckband and I’m really pleased with how they look.

I have wanted to make an Astoria sweater for a long time and I’m glad I finally got round to it. It’s perfect for layering over dresses and teaming up with the high waisted skirts in my wardrobe. I think I’ll make another one in a more lightweight fabric like french terry ready for the spring.
