Buy the 104 Unisex Egyptian Shirt sewing pattern from Folkwear. This is a shortened version of the traditional Egyptian galabia or robe. This versatile shirt can be made for casual or elegant occasions for men and women. The original garments are ankle length and unadorned. This pattern features a modern shirt length version that may be left plain or decorated with a contrasting yoke, appliqué, or soutache braid in typical designs, and/or handmade cording and knotted buttons.

It is a loose-fitting style with side panels and slit pockets. The sleeves are slightly flared and curve under the arms to meet the side panels. The yoke can be turned to the inside, or to the outside for an interesting contrast.

Instructions are included for knotted buttons, decorative cording, soutache appliqué, and lengthening the shirt to make the galabia.

Suggested fabrics: Crisp or soft fabrics such as muslin, lightweight denim, broadcloth, or light to medium weight cotton. For appliqué pieces, use 100% cotton.

Fabric requirements:

Shirt: 36″ (91 cm) wide fabric: 3 1/2 yd (3.2 m) // 45″ (115 cm) wide fabric: 2 7/8 – 3 yd (2.65 – 2.75 m) // 60″ (150 cm) wide fabric: 2 3/8 yd (2.2 m).

Ankle-length galabia: 36″ (91 cm) wide fabric: 5 – 5 1/2 yd (4.6 – 3.2 m) // 45″ (115 cm) wide fabric: 4 3/8 – 4 5/8 yd (4 – 4.25 m) // 60″ (150 cm) wide fabric: 3 5/8 yd (3.3 m).

All yardages include matching yoke. If contrasting yoke is desired, it will require 2/3 yd (0.65 m) of any width fabric. Do not decrease the main yardage.

Appliqué fabric (optional): 1/2 yd (0.5 m). Increase to 3/4 yd (0.7 m) for corded button loops and knotted buttons.

Sizing: XS – 2XL (approx. UK 4/6 – 24/26). Please check the size chart and finished garment measurements.

Notions: Thread to match appliqué pieces (if used) as well as shirt fabric; soutache (if desired), 12 yd (11 m).
