Buy the Children’s Back to Cool Backpack sewing pattern from Waves & Wild. A smart and stylish backpack that comes in two sizes: one for toddlers and one for older children. The backpack has two strap types, several pocket styles and the option to add piping. It can be lined or unlined.

Suggested fabrics:

Outer fabric: Medium to heavy weight woven fabric. Canvas, twill and denim are good choices. Medium weight upholstery fabrics can be used. Lighter fabrics such as quilting cotton can be used but will need interfacing. Water resistant fabrics such as ripstop or laminated cotton can be used to create a showerproof bag.

Bottom fabric: Heavy weight woven.

Lining fabric (lined option only): Light to medium weight woven such as quilting cotton, poplin or twill.

Fabric requirements: Yardage is based on a bag with all pockets/options. If you are making a plain bag you may need less. If you wish to pattern match/fussy cut you will need more.

115 cm (44″) wide fabric: Outer fabric, 75 cm (7/8 yd) for toddler or 100 cm (1 1/8 yd) for older child // Bottom fabric, 20 cm (1/4 yd) // Padded back option, an additional 40 cm (1/2 yd) of either your outer or bottom fabric // Lining fabric, 50 cm (1/2 yd) for toddler or 60 cm (5/8 yd) for older child.

Sizing:

Finished toddler size bag: approx. 30 cm x 24 cm x 11 cm (12″ x 9 1/2″ x 4 3/8″).

Finished older child size bag: approx. 38 cm x 28 cm x 12 cm (15″ x 11″ x 4 3/4″).

Notions: Closed zip, 35.5 cm (14″) for toddler or 48 cm (18″) for older child; quilt batting/fusible fleece/fusible foam, 30 cm (3/8 yd) for regular version or 60 cm (3/4 yd) for padded back version; 110 cm (1 1/4 yd) nylon/polypropylene strap (cotton/canvas strap can also be used) + 20 cm (1/4 yd) if using the strap for the hanging loop, 25 mm (1″) wide for toddler or 32 mm or 38 mm (1 1/4″ or 1 1/2″) for older child; 2 strap adjusters/ladderlock adjusters or four D-rings to match your strap; piping (optional), 2.5 m (2 3/4 yd) for toddler or 3 m (3 3/8 yd) for older child; 9 – 10 mm (3/8″) or 6 – 7 mm (1/4″) double fold bias binding, 1.5 m (1 3/4 yd) for bound straps and 4 m (4 1/2 yd) for enclosed inner seams; bag interfacing such as fusible canvas if you are using lighter fabrics; 14 cm (5 1/2″) of 10 mm (3/8″) wide elastic for the bottle pocket option.

PDF pattern includes: Instructions; A4/legal/letter print-at-home pattern (10 pages for toddler, 14 pages for older child); A0 copy shop pattern (1 sheet for toddler, 1 sheet for older child); projector pattern. This pattern has layers so you can print just the sizes(s) you need.
