Buy the Baby/Child/Adult Fell and Dale Flat Cap sewing pattern from Waves & Wild. This traditional style flat cap is designed for medium weight woven fabrics and is best suited to intermediate sewers. There is an option for adding elastic to the back. And don’t let the idea of a brim/peak put you off – there are several alternatives including re-purposing a plastic milk bottle!

This sewing pattern is available to buy in the following formats:

– PDF (available to download immediately after purchase). What is a PDF?

– PDF pattern + Printed A0 copy shop (We print out the A0 pattern sheets, but you’ll need to download the digital instructions, as we don’t print these. The PDF files will be emailed immediately after purchase, and the A0 pattern sheets will be dispatched next working day). What is Copy Shop?

Suggested fabrics:

Main fabric: This pattern can be made from most medium weight outerwear fabrics. Wool tweed and other wool blend fabrics are the best choice as they have the required weight but also mould well around curves. Other options include corduroy or denim (those with a little stretch will work best). A heavier linen could make a nice summer cap (with suitable interfacing).

Lining fabric: Light woven fabric such as cotton poplin or quilting cotton.

Fabric requirements: If you wish to pattern match, you may need more fabric than stated below.

Baby sizes: Maximum 40 cm (1/2 yd) outer fabric + 40 cm (1/2 yd) inner fabric.

Child sizes: Maximum 40 cm (1/2 yd) outer fabric + 50 cm (5/8 yd) inner fabric.

Adult sizes: Maximum 50 cm (5/8 yd) outer fabric + 60 cm (5/8 yd) inner fabric.

Sizing: Newborn-3 months – XL Adult. Please check the size chart.

Notions:

Brim/Peak: Craft plastic. 0.5 mm is a good choice for beginners and smaller size hats. 0.8 mm plastic is harder to work with but will create a sturdier hat and more professional finish. If you are unable to source craft plastic, plastic milk bottles are a great alternative! For the smallest sizes, it is possible to use craft foam or heavy interfacing for the brim. The finish won’t be quite so sharp, but your hat will be easier to sew and softer to wear.

Interfacing: You will need to apply fusible interfacing to all your outer pieces. If you are using a thick outer fabric, use a lighter interfacing. If you are using a slightly thinner fabric, use a medium weight interfacing. A soft interfacing will make sewing your hat easier. Even though you will be using a woven outer fabric, knit interfacing is soft but with enough structure and works well.

Elastic (for elasticated back option only): Maximum 10 cm (4″) of 20 mm (3/4″) elastic for baby sizes or 25 mm (1″) elastic for child and adult sizes.

PDF pattern includes: Instructions; A4/legal/letter print-at-home pattern (6 pages); A0 copy shop pattern (1 sheet); projector pattern. This pattern has layers so you can print just the sizes(s) you need.
