Buy the 206 Quilted Prairie Skirt sewing pattern from Folkwear. The most treasured item in an 18th century lady’s wardrobe was an elaborately quilted petticoat worn for both fashion and warmth. Overskirts were raised, divided and pulled aside to display the elegant handwork. In later years, Western pioneers made simpler calico versions of this skirt.

The quilting is concentrated in the lower part of the skirt, while the upper skirt section is lined with fabric alone. The skirt falls in gathers from a narrow waistband with a placketed side opening. It may be cut ankle or calf length. View A uses commercial pre-quilted fabric. Views B and C may be machine or hand quilted. View C has a more elaborate quilting design and no ruffle. Designs are given for a typical floral spray design and grid.

The skirt is very pretty today with a lacy blouse or knitted top for causal day wear or romantic evenings, especially in cooler climes.

Note if purchasing copy shop printing: One of the pattern pieces is divided across two A0 sheets. The two sheets will need to be joined with no overlap. 

Suggested fabrics: Lightweight cotton, blends, challis, wool, silk, satin, or taffeta. Lining should be lightweight cotton or blend. If making View A, you may want matching or coordinating pre-quilted and unquilted fabrics.

Fabric requirements: Yardages are for fabrics with or without nap or one way design. Yardages are given for calf and ankle length for 5’5″ (1.65 m). To adjust yardages for your height, add or subtract 2″ (5 cm) of fabric for each 1″ (2.5 cm) you wish to lengthen or shorten.

View A (buy both of these): 45″ (115 cm) wide fabric: Pre-quilted, 1 1/2 – 1 7/8 yd (1.37 – 1.72 m) // Unquilted, 1 5/8 – 2 yd (1.45 – 1.83 m).

View B (buy all three): 45″ (115 cm) wide fabric: Bonded batting, 1 1/2 – 1 7/8 yd (1.37 – 1.72 m) // Outer layer (unquilted), 2 3/4 – 3 1/8 yd (2.52 – 2.86 m) // Lining, 2 – 2 3/8 yd (1.83 – 2.18 m).

View C (buy all three): 45″ (115 cm) wide fabric: Bonded batting, 1 1/2 – 1 7/8 yd (1.37 – 1.72 m) // Outer layer (unquilted), 2 1/2 – 2 3/4 yd (2.29 – 2.52 m) // Lining, 2 – 2 3/8 yd (1.83 – 2.18 m).

Sizing: Waist 24″ – 36″ (61 cm – 92 cm) (approx. UK 6 – 18, based on our standardised size chart).

Notions: For all views: thread; one button; wide bias tape (one package); two hooks and eyes or snaps // For Views B and C: batting. The designer recommends synthetic bonded, or wool, batting of 1/2″ (1.2 cm) loft or less.
