Emmeline Skirt

Reviewed by Sarah Boddey on 10th May, 2020

When I saw the name of this pattern I just had to make it – Emmeline Pankhurst is one of my all time favourite heroines!  The skirt is very evocative of that era (although I suspect it would have been at least ankle length at that time!) and the sewn down pleats give a lovely nipped in look around the waist but plenty of body and volume in the skirt.  I used just 2m of fabric to cut out my size 14 and measured that I could have got away with just 1.8m if my fabric had been non-directional.  Although I did make the big bow waist-tie I don’t often wear it as I like to cover the waistband with a top or cardigan and it just added bulkyness.  The pleats are the most time-consuming part of the sew as there’s so many of them but other than that it’s a really quick make and would look lovely in all sorts of cottons, linens etc for the summer.  I’d love to make one in a broderie anglaise.

(I was lucky enough to get a photo of this make at a recent photo shoot I was at – my photos (and I) don’t usually look this good!)
