Buy the 131 Tibetan Chupa sewing pattern from Folkwear. This wrapped dress has a centuries-long history in Tibet. It is traditionally worn with added layers of aprons, woollen sashes, and a panel coat. Worn alone or with a top, the Chupa is a beautiful contemporary garment.

The Chupa features an asymmetrical wrap front, front and back shaping darts, a wide neckband, and simple faced armholes. Unique side extensions wrap around the back to tie in front. The resulting silhouette is slim, yet the extensions enable enough leg room to make walking easier than in most wrap skirts. Both the Chupa and Chupa-inspired wrap skirt can be made in the traditional ankle length or below the knee length.

Note if ordering copy shop printing: Some of the pattern pieces extend across two A0 sheets. The sheets will need to be joined at the edges with no overlap.

Suggested fabrics: Medium-weight cottons and blends such as denim, corduroy, velveteen, and poplin; medium-weight linen; medium-weight wool such as flannel, gabardine, and tweeds; medium-weight silk such as noil or tussah.

Long Chupa: 45″ (115 cm) wide fabric (XS-L only): 3 3/4 – 4 1/4 yd (3.4 – 3.9 m) // 60″ (150 cm) wide fabric: 3 1/8 – 3 7/8 yd (2.9 – 3.5 m).

Short Chupa: 45″ (115 cm) wide fabric (XS-L only): 3 1/4 – 3 3/4 yd (3 – 3.4 m) // 60″ (150 cm) wide fabric: 2 5/8 – 3 1/2 yd (2.4 – 3.2 m).

Long Skirt: 45″ (115 cm) wide fabric: 2 5/8 – 3 yd (2.4 – 2.7 m) // 60″ (150 cm) wide fabric: 1 3/4 – 2 3/4 yd (1.5 – 2.5 m).

Short Skirt: 45″ (115 cm) wide fabric: 2 3/8 – 2 1/2 yd (2.1 – 2.2 m) // 60″ (150 cm) wide fabric: 1 1/2 – 2 1/4 yd (1.3 – 2 m).

Sizing: XS – XL (approx. UK 4/6 – 20, based on our standardised size chart). Please also check the designer’s size chart.

Notions: Thread; one 3/8″ (1 cm) ball button; four pairs of hooks and eyes.
