Sewing Adventures at Stoff and Stil

We were really excited when we were invited to visit the headquarters of Danish fabric business Stoff and Stila couple of months ago. We flew out on Monday with lots of other sewing pals to Billund and spent two days fabric shopping, eating yummy food and learning all about how Stoff and Stil produce their patterns and fabric. What can we say? It was so much fun! See more of our trip below … and a special discount treat!
We were welcomed at the airport by Josephine who initially got in contact with us and organised the whole trip. She drove us to Herning where we checked into our hotel. We had a lovely bag of sewing gifts to welcome us to Denmark in these personalised handmade shoppers. There was also a handmade plush dressing gown, champagne and cake! It all felt very hygge! For those of us who arrived earlier, we then went for a traditional lunch before heading out to explore the local area and do some shopping. We enjoyed browsing all the lovely scandi-style shops and made a few purchases!
In the evening we were treated to the most amazing meal at a local sushi restaurant. There was a lot of sewing chatter and it was great to catch up with these lovely ladies. We also got to meet other members of the Stoff and Stil team.
If that wasn’t enough, on Tuesday we visited one of the 23 Stoff and Stilstores (they have shops in other parts of Denmark and also Sweden, Norway and Germany). It was FABRIC HEAVEN! Over 1000 square feet of fabric goodness. We only had an hour to choose fabric and patterns we would like, so the pressure was on! Take a look at this level of organisation …
There was so much fabric to choose from and it was all really good quality (believe me, we stroked most of it!) It was particularly good for dressmakers with hundreds of knitsand rayons, which can be more difficult to source in bricks and mortar shops in the UK.
Stoff and Stil also have their own pattern range, releasing new designs each season. Check out the full range here– we’ll be adding all these to the database next week!
We were then taken to Stoff and Stil HQ for lunch and a full tour of the building. Here we saw the design process for printing and choosing fabrics plus the awesome logistics of how they fulfil all their orders (over 600 people in the team!). The best machine by far was one that cuts the fabric from the roll automatically for multiple orders placed that day. Just scan the roll, place it on the machine and it takes care of the rest. Jaw dropping!
In the afternoon we had an exciting craft session where we created mood boards using the latest fabric collections and dressmaking patterns. We also heard more about the history of the family business and how they put their designs together each season. It was great to hear about their organic range of fabrics (GOTS certified) and how this is a growing area of the business.
It was a really great trip and the hospitality was amazing. We were also impressed by the quality of fabric and products. We are now looking forward to when all the fabrics we chose arrive in the UK and we can get sewing!
