The Handmade Fair

The Handmade Fair

Last week we spent a lovely day at The Handmade Fair, for those that haven’t made it yet, it’s fast becoming the craft event of the year! As well as loads of companies selling everything from fabric, patterns and knitted products to books, kitchenwares and gifts there were also talks and loads of craft workshops. You could come and spend a morning shopping and then go and spend the afternoon learning a new skill. There was paper cutting, pom pom making and cross stitching workshops to name but a few.

IMG_4535 IMG_4523

As well as all this there were loads of food vendors selling really interesting snacks, giving the whole place a real festival vibe (in London!). We sniffed out the Deco Prosecco bar (of course, 11.30 too early? We don’t think so!) and sat with a glass of fizz whilst listening to music.  All in all a very civilised day out.

IMG_4529 IMG_4520

The other great part of the day was that we started using Periscope. It’s a live video feed that links to twitter and you can film what you are up to but it only lasts 24 hours and then it’s gone, so you have to be quick! We did some great interviews with The Fabric Godmother as well as Sew Over It. It’s something we are going to start doing more of and you can follow us @thefoldline.

Josie from Fabric Godmother brought some lovely quilt jersey, pure Italian wools and vintage French 1960s chambrays. Lisa at Sew Over It launched the new Joan Dress pattern at the fair and had plenty of offers on fabrics and kits. We also said hello to Tilly and Laura from Tilly and the Buttons, met Jamie a.k.a Mr X Stitch and bumped into Annie from the Village Haberdashery!

We also discovered some lovely cross stitch designers including Floss & Mischief and dressmaking pattern designs Sew Me Something. Not strictly sewing but couldn’t resist stopping by at TOFT (Rachel is a big fan!), who doesn’t want to make a crochet lime T-rex called Gregor!?

Simplicity Blogger Meet Up

Simplicity Blogger Meet Up

Today we went to the Simplicity meet up in Central London to spend the morning with sewing royalty May Martin from the Great British Sewing Bee. It was a really lovely morning and a chance to catch up with old faces as well as meeting a lots of new people. There were about 50 bloggers  in total from all over the country and definitely some excitement about meeting May!

IMG_4440IMG_4442

The morning started out with an introduction from May about how she got into sewing and also how she got selected for the show, it was fascinating to hear about the interviews and the test videos she did before the call came to say she’d got the job! After that we had about an hour of demos and tops tips from May. We got taken through some great techniques including using different machine feet for different stitches as well as being taught some simple ways to insert a zip. With over 30 years as a teacher you can see this is clearly her vocation, she gives her knowledge freely and was able to make some tricky techniques look easy. All the techniques were being filmed close up so we didn’t miss a trick!

IMG_4460      IMG_4453

Once the demo was over we got a chance to have a cup of tea and some delicious cake whilst chatting with fellow sewing enthusiasts. Simplicity had a huge pile of patterns that they very kindly gave away as well as giving us all a goody bag stuffed with treats. We were pretty happy to catch May and have a photo with her too. All in all a lovely morning!
