Buy the Dominique Skirt sewing pattern from Tilly and the Buttons. This is the ideal project for a novice stitcher, or a satisfying one hour make for more experienced dressmakers.

Designed to be super simple for beginners, the straight skirt features straight seams to practise your stitching and an elasticated waistband for an easy fit – no fiddly zips or buttonholes! Choose from knee length or above-the-knee, and add the optional turnover top patch pockets.

The flared version of the skirt is slightly more challenging, as it’s cut on the bias and we suggest a drapier fabric for a flowing silhouette. Choose from knee length or an on-trend midi hemline, with optional turnover top pockets, belt loops and an elegant sash.

Suggested fabrics:

Straight skirt: Medium-weight woven fabrics, such as cotton, chambray, double gauze, linen, lighter weight denim and needlecord.

Flared skirt: Light- to medium-weight drapey fabrics, such as cotton lawn, chambray, viscose (rayon), silk or polyester crêpe de chine. Avoid anything slippery if you’re a beginner!

Fabric requirements:

Straight skirt: 150 cm (60″) wide fabric: Above knee, 1 – 1.2 m (1 1/8 – 1 3/8 yd) / Knee length, 1.1 – 1.5 m (1 1/4 – 1 5/8 yd) // 115 cm (45″) wide fabric: Above knee, 1.2 – 1.6 m (1 3/8 – 1 3/4 yd) / Knee length, 1.5 – 1.8 m (1 5/8 – 2 yd).

Flared skirt: 150 cm (60″) wide fabric: Knee length, 1.9 – 2 m (2 1/8 – 2 1/4 yd) / Midi length, 2.1 – 2.3 m (2 1/4 – 2 1/2 yd) // 115 cm (45″) wide fabric: Knee length, 2.2 – 2.8 m (2 1/2 – 3 1/8 yd) / Midi length, 2.9 – 3.1 m (3 1/8 – 3 3/8 yd).

Optional sash: 0.4 m (1/2 yd) extra fabric.

Sizing: UK 6 – 24. Please check the designer’s size chart and finished garment measurements.

Notions: Matching thread; your waist measurement in 25 mm (1″) wide elastic; large safety pin; for optional belt loops: 14 cm (5 1/2″) of 4-7 mm (1/8″-3/8″) wide ribbon or two elasticated hairbands.
